About Us
ClubSKNS is founded by two lifelong friends, and current college students who grew up playing golf, and just about every other sport you can think of.
The idea was born while I was sitting on the couch in my apartment, watching my roommate
s play video games. I noticed how in all these first person shooters, the game allows players to customize the appearance of their weapon. Golf is a very similar game in the way players customize their equipment, and I started wondering, "Is there any reason that wouldn't work on a golf club?"
I talked to one of my roommates who was on the university's golf team, and he was worried about the issue of weight, since golf clubs are engineered with extreme precision and balance. So I did the math before anything else: gross weight difference, center of gravity, moment of inertia during a swing. What I learned is that with a thin enough material, the way weight can be dispersed across the shaft means that there is nearly zero material difference with vs without vinyl. But I still wondered if a golfer would be able to feel the weight difference, even if it basically didn't exist, so I went to the local art store and cut the first wrap by hand to put on my own clubs. It worked.
What followed was months of figuring out how to make it work consistently. Cutting by hand meant measuring every time, because every club is a different size. Measuring every time resulted in quite a few errors, which for us is one thing we don't compromise on: the fit. If it doesn't fit perfectly, it nearly defeats the point. So I built the database, the math, and the code to solve the consistency problem. It turned into a system that generates precise cut dimensions for your specific clubs when you input all the relevant details (admittedly there are a lot). What started as a way to make my own process easier became out defining product feature: wraps cut to fit your clubs, not a universal approximation of them, although we do offer that in case your clubs aren't in the database.
When your order arrives, we want you to feel what we felt building this - the excitement of having something new, which almost nobody else has. Golf is already one of the most personal games in the world. Your clubs are probably already dialed in, the wrap is just the final touch. The part that says something about you beyond what people are used to looking for.
We're two college students who love this game and built something we couldn't find anywhere else. We think you'll love it too.
